Farm fields in South Hams, Devon, England

Farm fields in South Hams, Devon, England A patchwork quilt of green pastureland blankets large portions of South Hams, England. And a short journey from here brings you to the wild landscape of Dartmoor National Park or an equally picturesque coastline. The weather is pleasant, too—especially for Great Britain—as South Hams is in the southernmost portion of Devon, one of the most southerly districts of England. The temperate climate keeps the crops happy, while visitors also seem to flourish throughout the region, especially at the sunny coast. It wasn’t always just boating and beachcombing here, though. In 1944, training exercises for the D-Day invasion of France were held in a few evacuated South Hams villages.

Columns inside the Vakil Mosque of Shiraz, Iran

Image
Columns inside the Vakil Mosque of Shiraz, Iran The historic heart of its historic city , the Vakil Mosque is a superbly preserved example of 18th-century Persian architecture and design. The prayer hall’s 48 fluted columns rise to capitals carved in the shape of acanthus leaves. And above this is a ceiling of exquisitely detailed tile work , much of it added during a restoration in the 19th century. The combination of elements from the two periods, the Zand and Qajar, blend seamlessly and lend the entire complex a feeling of timelessness. Vakil Mosque is in one the most culturally significant cities in Iran. Not only can Shiraz claim two more historic mosques, but it’s also thought to have been first settled more than 4,000 years ago.
