Columns inside the Vakil Mosque of Shiraz, Iran

The historic heart of its historic city, the Vakil Mosque is a superbly preserved example of 18th-century Persian architecture and design. The prayer hall’s 48 fluted columns rise to capitals carved in the shape of acanthus leaves. And above this is a ceiling of exquisitely detailed tile work, much of it added during a restoration in the 19th century. The combination of elements from the two periods, the Zand and Qajar, blend seamlessly and lend the entire complex a feeling of timelessness.

Vakil Mosque is in one the most culturally significant cities in Iran. Not only can Shiraz claim two more historic mosques, but it’s also thought to have been first settled more than 4,000 years ago.
